PREPARATION
 Join me, Lou Haveman, on my 3,881 mile bicycle tour from June 30 to August 31, 2008, and help leave hunger behind. |
The following is a quote from a Sea to Sea participant.
"Cycling only takes up about 5-8 hours of the day which means the rest of the time will be surrounded by people at a school, campsite, etc. When I cycled across Canada in 2005 I realize that it was not primarily about cycling but it was about living in a journeying community. Relationships will flourish, and some relationships will be very difficult. This is why preparation through prayer and thought now must happen.
Some good community examples:

When you come into camp before most of the other cyclists, help unpack the gear truck even if it isn't your turn.

Think of others when packing your lunch.

Help someone who is extremely tired to set up his or her tent.

Ask how people are doing.

Think about the town/city/village that we are lodging at. Imagine ways we can be Christ's ambassadors even in the short evening/morning we are there.

Talk to others who are not in your "group" or in your age category.
Prepare today for such things. Pray that you will think of the group and understand that in giving to the group rather than taking true community will flourish. Pray for patience in relationships. Pray for patience and understanding if you have issue with the way things are going. Pray for the ability to go the extra mile, not just in cycling but in showing love and care for your neighbor."
